[1995] 4 All E.R. 695; (1995) 145 N.L.J. 1402. A firm of solicitors, TJG, offered a 20 percent reduction in fees if it lost a case. Their clients accepted this arragnement but decided during the litigation to change solicitors. The client sought to recover the retainer already paid, while the solicitors sought payment of outstanding fees of nearly a quarter million pounds. The judge (Garland J) held that the contract was unenforceable for Champerty, so neither party could recover on it.
