A general term for a right that one person acquires over the real property or PersonalProperty of another, when there is a contractual arrangement between the parties in respect of that property. In principle, a Mortgage or a hire-purchase charge amounts to a lien; however, the term is rarely encountered in English law these days, except occasionally in the context of arepairers lien, because more precise terms are typically used.
