Magna Carta has great symbolic significance, although few of its provision remain in force in their original form. It was first passed in 1215, and confirmed on numerous occasions thereafter. It sets out a number of limitations on the power of the state and the monarch over the individual, including the provision that no-one shall be judged except by his peers or by the law of the land.
