The defendant confessed to a crime during a police interview in because, she said, the police told her that her husband was having an extramarital affair with a woman who was being held in the next cell. This so distressed the defendant that she confessed to the crime simply to get out of the police station. The question then arose whether this behaviour on the part of the police, although clearly disreputable, amounted to 'oppression' for the purposes of s.76(2)(a) of Pace.
