To revoke or strike off a piece of legislation (statutory or common law), usually because it is obsolete. It is an interesting feature of the English legal system that Statutes (see: statute) never get repealed without the specific intervention of Parliament. This allows for celebrated cases like Ashford v Thornton (1818), in which a long-defunct statute was invoked, the existence of which was generally forgotten (see: Ashford v Thornton (1818)).
