[1936] All ER 1237 (HL). The facts of this case are not widely reported; what is important is Lord Atkin's discussion of what consitutes a Defamation. In general, he said, there is no satisfactory definition. The traditional view, that a defamation is something that exposes the victim to 'hatred, ridicule, or contempt', was too narrow, and he preferred the view that a defamation is something that tends to lower the claimant in the estimation of right-thinking members of society. This definition, of course, is not without problems of its own.
