At Common law, offenses were divided into treason, Felony, or Misdemeanour, with treason the most serious and misdemeanours the least. These distinctions are now largely abolished, but vestiges remain in the distinction between arrestable offenses -- serious offences for which a general Power of arrest exists, and those offences where a warrant is generally required.
